Movie Review- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

What is it about?                                                                                                                     After the massive destruction caused by Superman and General Zod in Man of Steel, (for those of you that don’t know, Zod vowed to destroy Superman on Krypton when Superman was born, but after its explosion, he came back to Earth to face Superman as an adult. But in doing so, a LOT of destruction was caused and many people died in the fight between Zod and Superman) the Gotham City vigilante Batman has established a new form of justice, but a more ruthless one. He thinks that the world can’t trust Superman after all the destruction he caused and the potential destruction he could cause. Which leads to the fight people have been waiting to see on screen for so long- Batman v Superman. Meanwhile, a new and very dangerous enemy rises: Lex Luthor (the most famous Superman villain ever).

How is it? 3.7/10                                                                                                                             Despite what critics are saying, Batman v Superman is pretty good! But if you’re not familiar with DC mythology, then some really good parts may not make sense. I would recommend familiarizing yourself with the main Justice League characters before watching this movie. The plot is a little messy, and the first half of the movie is very slow, but it definitely picks up by the end. The movie, while it makes sense, does not do a great job of making the plot clear, and it seems even convoluted at times. The new Batman, played by Ben Affleck, and the new version of Lex Luthor are awesome! Also, the new Wonder Woman, played by Gal Gadot, is really cool, although not in the movie for that long.

How is the action, humor, and special effects? 4/5                                                 The action in Batman v Superman is breathtaking. It has a few quite impressive sequences and the new brutal incarnation of Batman is a large part of these. The special effects are amazing, building up near the end, including a destructive (CGI) monster created by Lex Luthor. Finally, there is no humor in Batman v Superman. Unlike other superhero movies, like those in the MCU, Batman v Superman has no humor and is very dark and grim. This is one of the negative aspects of the movie, as without humor, the slow parts are not very interesting to watch.

Overall, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is a GREAT movie that is very dark and humorless, but has awesome action and special effects.

Movie Review- Star Wars: Attack of the Clones

What is it about?                                                                                                                  Set 10 years after The Phantom Menace, separatists are threatening the galaxy and the Republic. An assassination plot to kill Senator Amidala is taking place, and it is up to the Jedi to stop it and protect her. A mysterious clone army, and much more is discovered by the Jedi, which leads to the Clone Wars and destruction of the Republic. Attack of the Clones is an awful movie not worth your time.

How is it? 2.25/5                                                                                                                          Star Wars: Attack of the Clones is a 2-and-a-half-hours long blob of nothingness. It is extremely boring, terribly acted, and the romance between Anakin and Padmé is dry and just plain creepy. The few decent fight scenes there are cannot compensate for the terribleness of Attack of the Clones. The only one thing I can give it credit for, and for all the prequels, for that matter, is world-building: George Lucas, although he created these dry, stiff, and flat-out boring prequels, still managed to add a ton to Star Wars lore, and we would never look at the saga the same way without the prequels.

How is the action and special effects? 3/5                                                                    Like its predecessor and sequel, Attack of the Clones has overused CGI (computer generated imagery) and the action is scarce. The last battle of Geonosis is exciting as well as the battle between Count Dooku (the villain) and Yoda. However, the action does not make up for the horrendously acted, terrible first two-thirds of the movie.

In conclusion, Star Wars: Attack of the Clones is even worse than the Phantom Menace and isn’t worth the time watching.

Movie Review- Star Wars: the Phantom Menace

What is it about?                                                                                                                     Star Wars: the Phantom Menace is the first of the infamous prequel movies in the Star Wars saga. New fans to the franchise don’t need to know anything about the Star Wars universe to watch this movie, for it is the beginning of the saga. The Trade Federation has cut off all passages to the planet Naboo, so Jedi knights Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn go to fix the dispute. Along the way, they meet Anakin Skywalker, a promising young boy who grows up to be the feared Darth Vader, and encounter the (not-so-interesting) villain Darth Maul. If you are looking for a good, exciting movie filled with action, The Phantom Menace is not for you.

How is it? 2.5/5                                                                                                                       Overall, The Phantom Menace is a boring movie. It’s villain, Darth Maul, is terrible and speaks two lines(!) throughout the movie. It is unlike the other Star Wars movies and lacks the elements of adventure and excitement: who wants to see a Star Wars movie about trade? However, if you want to watch it, you do not need to have seen any other Star Wars movies.

How is the action and special effects? 3/5                                                                The action and special effects in The Phantom Menace are not amazing, but not terrible. The little action that exists is choreographed wonderfully, and is exciting to watch. However, the lack of it will bore viewers. The special effects, like the rest of the prequels are overused and ruin the effect.

Overall, Star Wars: the Phantom Menace is a terrible movie that is not worth watching.

Kung Fu Panda 3 Movie Review

What is it about?                                                                                                                   Kung Fu Panda 3 is the newest Kung Fu Panda movie in the series. Po, a chubby panda that becomes the legendary Dragon Warrior and fights alongside other animal warriors, is defending China when he is reunited with his long-lost father. He takes him back to a panda village where Po must train a village of clumsy pandas to fight Kai, an enemy that threatens to take the life force out of all great kung fu masters.

How is it? 4/5                                                                                                                            Kung Fu Panda 3 is visually terrific, funny movie. The animation is dazzling and Po’s interactions with other pandas are hilarious. You do not need to see the other Kung Fu Panda movies to understand this one, however you do need basic knowledge of the main characters (Po; Master Shifu, his lemur teacher; Tigress, Monkey, Mantis, Viper, and Crane, the animals that fight alongside Po; and Mr. Ping, Po’s adpoted father, a goose).

How funny is it? 3.5/5                                                                                                           Kung Fu Panda 3 is very funny, and much of the humor comes from either fun-loving, clumsy Po or his panda relatives, who also possess those qualities.

How are the visual effects? 5/5                                                                                        The animation in Kung Fu Panda 3 is wonderful. The characters in the movie possess extraordinary abilities, such as flying or being able to jump over mountains, so the movie embraces this and provides dazzling special effects.

In conclusion, Kung Fu Panda 3 is an entertaining, awesome, and funny movie with great special effects.

The Oscar nominations for 2016 are finally here! Check out the full list of nominations here!

The Martian received 7 nominations, including Best Picture, Visual Effects, and more! Star Wars: The Force Awakens received 5 nominations, including Visual Effects, Sound Editing, and more. I think that The Martian deserves to win Best Picture, as it was an entertaining, funny, and thrilling sci-fi movie. For Visual Effects, I think that Star Wars: The Force Awakens should win, for it had amazing special effects, shown a lot through large-scale space battles. Finally, I believe that Inside Out should win Animated Feature Film because it was a funny, touching film, one of the best animated movies of the year. Which movies do you think will win in these categories? Leave your opinion in the comments.

Mission: Impossible – Rouge Nation Movie Review

What’s it about?                                                                                                                                    The newest Mission: Impossible movie, and probably the best. Ethan Hunt and the IMF, or Impossible Mission Force, for those who don’t know, take on the Syndicate, a secret organization bent on destroying the IMF. This spectacular movie is enjoyable for those new to the franchise and those familiar with it.

How is it? 5/5                                                                                                                                        Amazing. Rouge Nation has awesome action sequences, humor sprinkled throughout the movie that will have you laughing, and truly impossible stunts.

How is the action and humor? 5/5                                                                                              The action in Rouge Nation is excellent. For example, the initial sequence in which Tom Cruise hangs on the side of an airplane is marvelous. Also, much of the humor comes from Benji, a member of Ethan’s team, and William Brandt, played by Jeremy Renner, who many know as Hawkeye in The Avengers.

In conclusion, Mission: Impossible – Rouge Nation is an excellent movie.

Movie Review- Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

What is it about?                                                                                                                                       The seventh movie in the Star Wars saga. 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi, a new galactic threat has risen: the First Order. Luke Skywalker has disappeared, and the only clue to finding Skywalker is in a droid who befriends Rey, a scavenger on the planet Jakku. She meets Finn, a stormtrooper that escaped the First Order. They must team up with Han Solo and the Resistance to make sure that the information does not get to the First Order. To watch and fully enjoy The Force Awakens, it is better to have seen the previous Star Wars films. However, if you have not seen them, then this article will provide you with everything you need to know before watching The Force Awakens.

How is it? 5/5                                                                                                                                                   Awesome. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is an amazing movie, possibly one of the best of 2015. It has action, humor, and outstanding special effects. Even if you have not seen the original Star Wars movies, you can still enjoy The Force Awakens.

How is the action, humor, and special effects? 5/5                                                                       The Force Awakens is filled with a blend of humor, spectacular intergalactic action, and fantastic special effects that will give you an entertaining 2 hours and 16 minutes. Much of the humor comes from BB-8, a droid shaped like a soccer ball that contains the map to Luke Skywalker. However, Finn, the former stormtrooper, is also very funny along with Han Solo, who fans will know as the famous pilot of the Millenium Falcon, and C-3PO, the golden, talkative droid. However, some of the jokes and references are from the past  Star Wars movies, and newcomers to the franchise may not understand them. The action in The Force Awakens is awesome. The lightsaber duels between Kylo Ren, the main villain, and Finn and Rey are wonderful, along with some of the larger scale battles between ships of the Resistance and the First Order. Finally, the special effects are amazing. The previously-mentioned fights between Resistance and First Order ships contain many of these eye-popping visual effects.

Overall, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a great movie.

Movie Review- Ant-Man (2015)

What is it about?                                                                                                                                       The latest addition in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or the Avengers/Guardians of the Galaxy universe, is an amazing movie. After getting kicked out of his own company, Dr. Hank Pym recruits former thief Scott Lang, who was just released from prison. He trains him to become the Ant-Man, by using a suit that allows him to shrink, but have super-strength and an army of ants. Lang must prevent Darren Cross, whose former mentor was Pym, from using a similar suit for evil. You do not need to have seen the Avengers movies to understand Ant-Man, however there are some references to events in the Avengers movies.

How is it?  4.25/5                                                                                                                                         Overall, Ant-Man is one of the best films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and perhaps tied for the funniest with Guardians of the Galaxy. It is enjoyable for both Avengers fans and those who have not seen the Avengers.

How is the action, humor, and special effects? 5/5                                                                             The action in Ant-Man, combined with dazzling special effects is remarkable. However, it is not as large-scale as other Marvel movies, such as The Avengers. For example, the final battle takes place in a little girl’s bedroom on a toy train track, as compared to in The Avengers, where it takes place in the whole New York City. This is also a positive trait about the movie: it differentiates it from other Marvel movies.  It is also lighter than other films in the Marvel universe, the concept itself being quite silly. Ant-Man is also a hilarious movie, and much of the humor comes from one of Lang’s thief friends, Luis, played by Michael Peña.

In conclusion, Ant-Man is an amazing movie.

Movie Review – Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip (2015)

What is it about?

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip is the hilarious fourth entry in the Alvin and the Chipmunks series. Alvin, Simon, and Theodore think that Dave is going to propose to his girlfriend in Miami, and start a new family without him. On top of that, they would be stuck with Dave’s girlfriend’s son, who frequently bullies them. So they set out to Miami to try to stop Dave’s proposal.

How is it? 3.5/5

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip is the funniest movie in the series that will have you laughing the whole time. However, you do not need to have seen the previous films to understand and enjoy this one.

How funny is it? 4.5/5

This movie is filled with slapstick humor throughout. Most of the humor comes from the chipmunks, but there are some hilarious parts with an air marshal that has a conflict with the chipmunks. For example, Alvin and the rest of the chipmunks hurl Theodore onto the body of the air marshal.

Overall, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip is an enjoyable, hilarious movie.
